Athletes meet on the roof of Europe

The day after the 40th edition of Athletissima, the Jungfrau railway and Hublot took the most prestigious athletic discipline to new heights.

Dario Cologna - one of the best cross-country skiers of all time - and Asafa Powell, one of the fastest athletes in the history of the discipline, took on a unique challenge. They competed over 100 metres at an altitude of 3,454 metres. A flying start for Cologna on snow and a starting pistol for Powell on the track, each on a route created especially for this unique race. Cheering them on from the sidelines were Mujinga Kambundji, one of the country’s best sprinters, and her team-mates from the 4 x 100 metres, as well as top Swiss wrestler Kilian Wenger, an ambassador for the Jungfrau region.

Hublot ambassador since 2010, Dario Cologna is one of the best Swiss cross-country skiers in history. Winner of three crystal globes, he was named Swiss of the Year 2012 and Swiss Sportsman of the Year 2013. In full summer training, this was the first time he had entered such a short sprint.

Former holder of the 100 metre world record and the fourth fastest athlete in the history of the discipline, Asafa Powell was crowned 4 x 100 metre relay Olympic Champion in 2008 and World Champion in 2009. This was his first time competing at this altitude against a sportsman from another discipline.

Two Hublot trophies were brought in especially for the occasion. Marked with the logo of the brand, these trophies were created to honour the extraordinary careers of these elite sportsmen. Dario Cologna and Asafa Powell were presented with these symbolic trophies by Kilian Wenger.
