Mido Watch Design Contest

On 20 March this year, Mido launched a design contest at Baselworld. Three designers were invited to create a new limited edition timepiece drawing inspiration from London’s famous Big Ben and its four clock faces.

At the end of April, the names of the three shortlisted candidates - Eric Giroud, a Swiss designer and architect, the Italian Lorenzo Vallone, founder and artistic director of Ultravision Design Studio, and Sébastien Perret - were unveiled. All three projects were presented on 30 July and members of the public were given until 30 September to vote for their favourite model on a dedicated website. The jury of the Mido Watch Design Contest comprised Esa Mohamed, President of the International Union of Architects, Franz Linder, President of Mido, and of course the public.

Voting by the general public was hugely successful, mobilising the brand’s fans and watchmaking and architecture enthusiasts around the world. In total, nearly 100,000 people from approximately 100 countries played a part in selecting the winner. The laureate was designer Sébastien Perret, who won the contest and will take credit for the new Mido timepiece inspired by Big Ben. The prize-giving ceremony took place on 15 October this year at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai. The watch, which will be produced in a limited edition of 500 pieces, will be presented at Baselworld 2016.

After the Coliseum in Rome for the All Dial collection and the Great Wall of China for the Great Wall collection, Mido now therefore pays homage to another legendary work of architecture that has left its mark on history.
